A follow up to yesterday's post concerning the Georgia official facing criminal charges for obstructing access to public records.

Retiring president of the Florida First Amendment Foundation, Barbara Petersen, reports that two public officials have been criminally prosecuted and served jail time in Florida for intentionally violating the state's public records laws.

W.D. Childers, Escambia County Commissioner, received a six month sentence and was fined for his violation.

Vanette Webb, Escambia County School Board was sentenced to jail and also fined.

She indicated that "lots have paid fines, some removed from office. Lots more slaps on the wrist. One criminal case on appeal in Broward County."

As indicated, there have been no known criminal prosecution for willful concealment or destruction of a public record in Kentucky in spite of the fact that the open records law included criminal sanctions at its inception in 1976. KRS 61.991(2)(a).
