An eloquent plea for revision to the Nevada open records law to secure rights that we in Kentucky take for granted in our existing law.

The commonly understood uses to which public records laws are put are not exclusive. Twenty-five years of reviewing open records appeal convinced me of the law's value in unexpected contexts.

Our goal at the Kentucky Open Government Coalition is to empower Kentuckians to become citizen advocates for our open government laws, encourage broader understanding of the laws, alert Kentuckians to threats to the laws, and provide a voice for citizens in preserving our laws and advancing the cause of open government.

The value of the open records and open meetings laws is not limited to the media. And the importance of fighting to preserve the rights we have under these laws has never been greater.

Please take a moment to read this brief editorial (if time permits). It reaffirms in my mind the debt we owe the framers of our laws in securing broad citizen rights under the Kentucky open records and open meetings laws.
