And on a much more somber note, Open the Government, a Washington based "inclusive, nonpartisan coalition that works to strengthen our democracy and empower the public by advancing policies that create a more open, accountable, and responsive government," acknowledged the passing of Congressman Elijah Cummings in these words:

"Rep. Cummings was one of the greatest champions of accountability in government of our time. In him, openness and civil society advocates had an esteemed ally who relentlessly fought for a more transparent government as a means to strengthen our democracy. His unwavering support for civil society's efforts to counter secrecy and combat corruption inspired us, and we will continue our work in his memory.

We are tremendously grateful for Cummings' life of service and leadership and extend heartfelt condolences to his family and his indomitable staff at this difficult time."
